About the Role:

‍

We are seeking a Lead Avalanche Technician to support our avalanche safety operations across the East Kootenay region. This role is classified as a seasonal, full-time position from November 1st, 2026 to May 31, 2027. Start and end dates may vary based on project requirements. Hours will gradually increase through the early season to full-time levels for the main winter period, then taper in the spring, with reduced hours expected by April and very limited hours possible by early May

The successful candidate must reside or re-locate to the East Kootenay region (e.g., Elk Valley, Cranbrook, Kimberley, Crowsnest Pass). They will report to the Regional Operations Manage and work from home and in the field both individually and with a small team of other avalanche technicians.

The work is varied, challenging, and rewarding. This is an ideal role for someone who is highly motivated, accustomed or willing to work on industrial projects and enjoys field and office based work.

Key Responsibilities:

• Prepare daily avalanche hazard forecasts.
• Collect field data primarily by road, but also by snowmobile, helicopter, and ski/splitboard travel.
• Lead and deliver avalanche safety training courses tailored to project needs.
• Conduct avalanche risk assessments, avalanche mapping, and write clear, technically sound reports.
• Plan and conduct explosive avalanche control missions.
• Prepare InfoEx submissions and other project documentation.
• Drive in winter conditions on highways and resource roads to sites throughout the East Kootenays.
• Coordinate logistics and communications for ongoing projects.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

• Minimum 5 years’ experience in snow safety
• CAA Operations Level 2 and CAA Avalanche Professional designation.
• WorkSafe BC Blaster’s Certificate (helicopter endorsement required), with willingness to obtain BC Mine Surface Blaster - 3rd Class Certification.
• Intermediate first aid (formerly OFA Level 2) or higher, with transportation endorsement
• Strong computer literacy with Microsoft Office and InfoEx.
• Excellent technical writing skills for clear and professional reporting.
• Experience with avalanche mapping and mapping software applications.
• Demonstrated experience communicating avalanche risk with stakeholders.
• Experienced and skilled in backcountry travel on skis or splitboard.
• Must reside in the East Kootenay or Crowsnest Pass regions.
• Willing to work a demanding work schedule that includes long field days, work on weekends/holidays and on-call hours.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

• Experience with remote avalanche forecasting.
• Leadership experience in a snow safety role.
• CAA Introduction to Snow Avalanche Mapping course completion.
• Snowmobile operator training.
• Experience in highway or industrial avalanche programs.
• Familiarity with industrial safety protocols and field operations.
• TDG certification.
• Advanced First Aid (formerly OFA L3) or Wilderness First Responder with OFA equivalency.
• Diploma or degree in a science or engineering related discipline.

Compensation and Benefits:

• Expected seasonal earnings range from $45,000 to $55,000 depending on qualifications, experience, and hours worked.
