Deputy Minister’s Consulting Engineering Awards: Highway 16 – Mile 35 Avalanche Fencing

We are proud to announce that Dynamic Avalanche Consulting Ltd. received the British Columbia Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure Deputy Minister’s Consulting Engineering Award for the Highway 16 – Mile 35 Avalanche Fencing project. Alan Jones P.Eng. (second from Left) accepted the award for Dynamic Avalanche Consulting Ltd.

Throughout the winter months, snow avalanches were regularly affecting the Mile 35 Bluffs site, located about 56 km west of Terrace, BC on Highway 16. The avalanches resulted in many delays and road closures. In collaboration with Thurber Engineering, Dynamic Avalanche Consulting designed avalanche fencing to passively retain the snow in place. In the fall of 2014, crews completed Canada’s second-ever avalanche fencing installation at the Mile 35 site. The installation includes 82 meters of 3 meter high steel mesh, installed in three rows in the avalanche starting zone, to prevent avalanche initiation.
